SULPHUR BLUFF— The Sulphur Bluff Lady Bears hosted Detroit Friday for their first in a pair of district matches. The two teams will face each other again in Detroit on Tuesday, Oct. 20.

Skylar Stanley got things started for the Lady Bears, scoring on the opening possession with a kill. Alley Collett and Tori Raine were responsible for a five consecutive points to put the Lady Bears up 13-11. Collett scored on three kills while Raine provided a pair of aces in that stint.

After building an 18-14 lead, Sulphur Bluff allowed Detroit to score on three consecutive possessions, forcing the Lady Bears to use their first timeout of the set with their lead reduced to one point. Sulphur Bluff fought hard to hold on to their lead but fell short in the opening set, 25-23.

It was Stanley who got the ball rolling for the Lady Bears again early in the second set. Stanley scored on a block and kill to put her team up 4-1.

An ace from Taylor Wallis gave Sulphur Bluff an 11-6 lead and forced Detroit to use their first timeout of the frame. The Lady Bears continued their momentum, pushing their lead to 18-12, making Detroit use another timeout to try to slow them down.

Detroit came out of the timeout on a 10-2 run and went on to take the set, 25-23.

After leading for majority of the first two sets, the Lady Bears never saw a lead in the third and final frame. They were able to get things up at 13-13, but Detroit finished the set on a 12-1 run, taking the set, 25-14.

It was the second straight loss for Sulphur Bluff after losing earlier in the week to Simms Bowie, 3-0. The Lady Bears were set to face Avery on Tuesday but that game has been canceled. Their next game will be on the road against Rivercrest Friday. The junior varsity is set to begin at 4:30 p.m. with the varsity to follow.
