The Sulphur Springs Wildcats are looking to bounce back from a district loss as they trek to Corsicana. The Wildcats fell to 1-54 overall, 1-3 in district action after losing 42-14 at home against Ennis.

“Corsicana has a good team, but they don’t have a line as big as Ennis. They are faster than us but not really big. They’re fast and athletic and have some players who can really make plays. They’re a high-energy team. We’ll have to be ready to go; our backs are against the wall,” said Greg Owens, Wildcats head football coach.

Corsicana is 5-2 for the year, 4-1 in district. The Tigers were trounced 27-0 by Royse City.

“The loss to Royse City they had gave them a bad taste in their mouths. They want to bounce back just like us and get a district win,” Owens said.

Listed as standouts on the Tigers are quarterback Solomon James, receivers Qua Chambers and Drew Denbow, and running backs Anthony Young and Damarius Daniels.

“The quarterback (James) is very instinctive; he can make some big plays. We have to keep him bottled up; he comes up with game changing plays, when he is flushed out,” Owens said.

The Tigers operate from a spread attack with multiple formations. They run the ball 70% of the time but can change according to game and weather situations.

“We saw them live, and Corsicana is not afraid to throw the ball up. Their receivers go get it, and they can make some scary plays,” Owens said. “The game really comes down to what we do. We can’t still make turnovers and penalties and do things to get us behind the chains. We have to put together some district wins if we want to make the playoffs.”

The coach said football practice has been going well this week.

“We have cooler weather. We ran 112 snaps yesterday. We’re getting in the work. Everyone was tired after practice,” Owens added.

The Wildcats and Tigers clash Friday at 7:30 p.m. in Corsicana.
