The outdoor temperatures have cooled off, at least a little! Our office is abuzz with Fall Festival business. One of the premier events for the Hopkins County Festival is the Arts & Crafts Show. It is shaping up very nicely, but we still have room for just a handful of vendors. All items must be handmade or handcrafted, and vendors must provide their own display shelves, tables and chairs. Set-up hours are 7:30-10 a.m. Friday, Oct. 25, at the Sulphur Springs High School cafeteria and north entrance. Spaces will be marked with the vendor’s name.
The Arts & Crafts Show will be open to the public from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday, Oct. 25, and from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 26. Be sure to stop by and see all the great items for sale!

Another interesting event is the Creative Arts Contest. Not to be confused with the Arts & Crafts Show, this event on in which items may be entered to be judged. Due to limited space, this contest is open only to Hopkins County residents.
Registration of items will take place Thursday, Oct. 24, from 4:30 to 6 p.m., and on Friday, Oct. 25 from 7:30 to 9:30 a.m. at the Sulphur Springs High School Conference Center. There are four age divisions: Children (10 years and younger); youth (11-19); Adults (20-69); Mature Texans (70 and above). There is also a division for Assisted Living and Nursing Home residents.
Entry categories are: Art, Bake Show, Clothing, Creative Crafts, Decorated Cakes, Food Preservation, Handiwork, Holiday Corner, Horticulture, Photography, Quilts and Woodworking. Judging will take place on Friday, Oct. 25, starting at 10 a.m. Entries will be on display for public viewing until 5 p.m. on Friday, and from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Saturday. Best of Show pictures will be taken at 1:30 p.m., after which all entries may be picked up. For a full set of guidelines, go to the Fall Festival website, or call my office at 903-885-3443.
DISTRICT 4-H PHOTO CONTEST
Our office just received the 2019 District 4-H Photography contest information. For 4-H members, contest registration is open until Nov. 1 on 4-H Connect. Actual photos will be delivered to Morris County on Nov. 13 and judging will take place on Nov. 19.
Photo categories are Animals, Catch-all, Details & Macro, Dominant Color, Elements of Design, Enhanced, Food, Landscape/Nature, Motion/Action, Night, People, Plant/Flora, Shadows/ Silhouette, and the 2019 theme “The Elements.” Photos must be 8-by-10 inches and permanently mounted on photographic mount board or a board of like thickness (foam board is acceptable). Many more opportunities are available through the Hopkins County 4-H program. Enrollment for the 2019/2020 year is now taking place. Simply go to http://texas.4hon-line.com and follow the on-screen instructions. Hopkins County has four clubs: Miller Grove (meets at Miller Grove School), Infinity (meets at Hopkins County Extension Office), Paws (school-based club at Sulphur Springs Elementary), Equine Club (meets at Extension Office) and Veterinary Science Club (meets at Extension Office). The fee is $25 until Nov. 1, after which it goes to $30. Any youth wishing to participate in activities and events under 4-H must be enrolled. We will be glad to assist if you have questions.
