Deputies conducted a welfare check on a tenant at a Sulphur Springs RV park on State Highway 19 south at 10:25 a.m. Thursday. The park manager called 911 to report he had received a call from family members who were unable to make contact with the renter, Larry Scott Gruss, 64.

The manager advised he made contact with Gruss, who he described as incoherent and agitated, prior to calling 911.

Deputies were allowed to enter the trailer and reportedly found Gruss laying on a living room couch/bed in his underwear. While speaking with Gruss, they allegedly observed a clear plastic baggie containing a white powder residue and a cut straw also containing residue on the kitchen counter near the front door. Gruss reportedly initially said he did not know what it was, then later said it might be cocaine.

Deputies allegedly observed other suspected narcotics in plain view. Gruss reportedly actively resisted arrest but was eventually taken into custody.

A search warrant was issued and additional contraband and drug paraphernalia was located. Deputies and investigators recovered approximately 11.49 grams of heroin and 2.62 grams of methamphetamine.

Gruss was charged with three counts of possession of a Penalty Group 1 controlled substance, less than 1 gram, 1-4 grams and 4-200 grams. No bond was set, and he remained in jail as of press time Friday.
