2023 Fundraising goal achieved

Body

On Tuesday, Oct. 2, the annual Terrific Tuesdays Walk to Remember took place on Celebration Plaza as a remembrance for friends and loved ones affected by Alzheimer’s disease, dementia, and other brain-related illnesses. More than fifty people attended. The Walk to Remember fundraising campaign also included several smaller walk events during September.

The Terrific Tuesdays respite care program provides a service to caregivers in the community who are caring for persons suffering from memory loss. The program offers caregivers a brief break each week while their charges are in the care of volunteers providing a morning of games, music, snacks, and social interaction.

Funding for operating Terrific Tuesdays is raised annually through donations received during mini-walks at local nursing homes and assisted living facilities, the Walk, and through the sale of raffle tickets for a custom-made donated quilt. By the end of the Walk to Remember campaign, the good news was shared that the goal of $10,000 had been reached, assuring another year of Terrific Tuesdays weekly programs.

As the event concluded, appreciation was shown to those who helped generate the spirit of the program. The first place Spirit Award went to Wesley House Assisted Living and Memory Care, and the second place Spirit Award went to Sunny Springs Nursing and Rehab. The Community Spirit Award was won by Saputo Foods of Sulphur Springs. The winning raffle ticket drawn for the donated quilt made by Lone Star Heritage Quilt Guild was held by Karen Strickland. Appreciation was shown to Gary Spraggins, who provided music for the walking event; to master of ceremony Enola Gay Mathews; and to individuals and volunteers who support Terrific Tuesdays in ways large and small.

Tammy Reardon, Terrific Tuesdays Director, reminds everyone that 2024 will mark the twentieth anniversary year of the program in Sulphur Springs, and a special celebration is being planned.
