Giving Back

On Aug. 5, Tableleaf partnered with Sulphur Springs Dodge to host the first annual Back to School Burger Bash at Backstory Brewery in Sulphur Springs.

Logan Vaughan is the owner of Tableleaf, a locally owned company that offers business consulting, hospitality training, catering, food events and competitions all centered around their mindset of “gathering more people to the table.”

“This event was the brain-child of a conversation that took place between Ben Whillock of Backstory Brewery, David Slaughter from Slaughter’s BBQ Oasis, and myself,” Vaughan said. “My wife, Whitney, is a school teacher and mentioned the idea of helping other teachers stock their closets with school supplies for local kids, and Scott Nottingham, the new owner of Sulphur Springs Dodge, and I had discussed partnering up for an event to raise money together for our community. Everything fell into place.”

Almost 20 cooks, chefs, caterers and local grillers competed for a winner-takes-all appetizer and burger competition. Each cook was given a new classic Weber Kettle charcoal grill and a bag of Kingsford charcoal that had been donated by Lowe’s of Sulphur Springs. Cooks competed with these and were then allowed to take their new grills home after the competition.

More than 300 guests visited the event to test drive new Dodge RAM trucks, sample appetizers and burgers from the cooks, enjoy craft beverages from the brewery and win door prizes. The award ceremony was followed by a concert from Dubb & the Luv Machines. Weber Grills also made an appearance and showcased their newest grills.

Taking first place in the burger competition was David Slaughter, while Brandon Bell won first place for appetizer.

“This event will be the first of many Tableleaf events. Our direction is to combine our passion for cooking to build opportunities for our great community to come and share the table together. Essentially, this is about loving our neighbors through food.” Vaughan said.

Over a dozen local businesses also partnered with Tableleaf, and together the event raised $4,500 to give to the Sulphur Springs Independent School District for the purchase of school supplies for teachers to be able to give out to students in need.

“I can’t describe how grateful I am to live in a community where people join together for a common good. I could not have done this without the local individuals and businesses who partnered with us. I am excited to see what the future holds not only for more events like this one, but for our beautiful town as well,” Vaughan said.
