Seniors given honors, awards at program

Como-Pickton High School Monday evening held a special Honors and Awards ceremony to recognize the Senior Class of 2023 for outstanding achievement in classes, activities and rewarded them with Scholarships.

Naval Commander Rick Dorsey awarded Jackson Lavender with a Navy ROTC scholarship, valued at approximately $200,000 to attend an aerospace engineering program in South Carolina. He also was nominated by two congressmen for the Air Force Academy and West Point. Overall, he was offered about $1 million in scholarships and military awards.

Michael Bowen presented Johnny Gallegos, Baylee Bowen and Chloe Jalufka with $1,000 Como-Pickton FFA scholarships.

Robin Shrode, executive director for the John and Deborah Gillis Foundation, presented Lauren Lewellen and Christian Gilbreath with $40,000 Bright Star Scholarships.

Julie Dowell received a $16,000 Academic Dean Award from Southwestern Adventist University.

Troy Menser and Cade Garner each received a $500 CPCISD Band Boosters Scholarship. Menser also was awarded a Finis & Onree Attlesey and Garland Sweet Gamblin Scholarship.

Robert Newsom presented Braxton Andrews with a $3,000 Academic Excellence Scholarship from Rotary Club.

Chloe Jaluka receives a Hopkins County Jr. Comercial Heifer Show Scholarship from Cody Jalufka. She too received a $6,000 Big Tex Scholarship Terry Bolton presents $1,000 Greenpond Scholarships to Maddison Williams, Dalton Morgan and Baylee Bowen.

Morgan and Makensa Morris received $500 City of Como Scholarships from Austin Baxley.

Johnny Gallegos recieved a $2,000 City National Bank Scholarship given in honor of Tim Glenn as well as a $750 Gerald Walters Memorial Scholarship.

Cash Wilton and Evan Pegues each received a Hopkins County Freedom Ball $1,000 Patriot Scholarship and a $16,000 UT Tyler Honors College and Academic Excellence Scholarship.

Jennifer Sumrow presents $3,000 President Scholarships to Christian Gilbreath and Michelle Mejia and a $1,000 Honors Scholarship to Johnny Gallegos to attend Northeast Texas Community College.

Jerry Williams presnted $500 Scholarships from Yantis Masonic Lodge to Braxton Andrews and Baylee Bowen Superintendent Dr. Greg Bower presents Como-Pickton Administrators Scholarships in the amount of $1,000 each to Cash Wilton Troy Merser, Michelle Mejia, Johnny Gallegos, Mattison Buster, Baylee Bowen and Braxton Andrews. Joining Dr. Bower in presenting the award are Principal Kelly Baird and Assistant Superintendent Lydia Walden.

Receiving $500 CP Athletic Booster Club Scholarships were Buster, Andrews, Johnny Gallegos and Dalton Morgan.

Gallegos too received a $500 scholarship given in memory of Lonnie Niblett.

Andrews also received an $8,000 Alliance Bank Scholarship and a $2,500 Masonic Children and Family scholarship, a $32,000 OSU Student Achievement Scholarship, a $19,000 OSU Patterson Scholarship and a $300 Region 8 ESC Scholarship.

Klain Thomas received a $45,000 Honors College award and a $2,000 per semester renewable up to four years Presidential Scholarship from Texas A&M University- Commerce.

Buster too received a $152,000 scholarship to play D1 softball in Louisiana Tech University, a $500 Association of Texas conservation District Employees scholarship awarded by Leon Gunn, a $1,000 Hannah Pegues Memorial Scholarship, a $500 CP Little Dribblers Outstanding Student scholarship, Eddy Gonzalez was awarded a $2,000 Clay Evans Memorial Scholarship.

Baylee Bowen also received a $1,000 Agriculture Teachers Association of Texas scholarship, a $1,000 East Texas State Fair Dairy Show award, a Fort Worth Stock Show Calf Scramble and a $500 Gerald Walters Memorial Scholarship.

Daisy Gomez was awarded a $500 Claims Administration Services-Ozella Jones Memorial Scholarship.

Gilbreath and Bailey Neal received East Texas State University Christian Leadership and Dean Scholarships.

Dalton Morgan and Klain Thomas each received Farmers Electric Coop awards in the amount of $500.

Carlos Perez was awarded the $500 First National Bank of Winnsboro scholarship.

Evan Pegues was awarded a $2,000 Friends of the Hawks scholarship and a $500 Gerald Walters Memorial Scholarship.Texas High School Bass Association awarded Hayden Potts a $1,000 scholarship.
