Hopkins County should prepare for Independence Day as usual, according to County Judge Robert Newsom.

The July 4th holiday will feature fireworks at Celebration Square, also known as the Downtown Square, according to a release from Newsom.

"There will be music, restaurants will be open and fireworks will follow," Newsom stated. "Make plans to be on or around Sulphur Springs Square for a great Independence Day event."

Newsom told the News-Telegram that the motivating factors for pushing ahead with the event despite earlier COVID-19 closures in spring was the county's strong sense of patriotism.

"We will honor our veterans who have sacrificed so much for us," Newsom stated.

Newsom also shared an unsourced quote which stated 'ample data from China and Italy showed most transmissions [of COVID-19] are intrafamilial [between family members]... and the risk of outdoor transmission is virtually zero.'
