The Sulphur Springs Police Department Special Crimes Unit arrested four people during a traffic stop Wednesday afternoon near Buford Park, completing an investigation regarding possession and distribution of methamphetamine.

Investigators had reportedly purchased large quantities of methamphetamine and been conducting surveillance on Elzie Antwain Sneed, 33, of Sulphur Springs, and they observed him driving a silver Cadillac at the intersection of League and Connally Streets around 5:30 p.m. The SCU obtained three active felony warrants for manufacture or delivery of a Penalty Group 1 controlled substance.

During the stop, officers reportedly observed suspected MDMA (Ecstasy), which later field tested positive, in plain view in the front passenger seat inside the vehicle. Sneed was charged with an additional felony count of possession of less than 1 gram of a Penalty Group 2 controlled substance in a drug-free zone; the traffic stop occurred less than 1,000 feet from Kids’ Kingdom. His bond was set at $260,000.

Also arrested for possession were: Valerie Nichole Covington, 17, and Taylor Nicole Boyett, 21, both of Sulphur Springs; and Melanie Mercedes Edwards ,26, of Eastland.

Bond was set at $10,000 for each of the three, and all four people remained in jail as of press time Thursday.
