The January meeting of the Lena Day Garden Club will be on the 24th at the design boutique of club member Brittany Mae Fisher in Quitman.

For December, the club celebrated Christmas with a luncheon in the home of Judy Temples. Not only was Judy the hostess, but she prepared and served dinner with all the trimmings. Barbara Stewart, Ruthmary Hall and Regina Filak shared delicious homemade desserts.

Judy’s home expressed the true meaning of Christmas showcasing family, friends and faith. Although many people have shifted to artificial greenery for safety and practicality, Judy displayed a live twofoot round dish garden filled with a Christmas cactus covered in lipstick fuchsia pink blooms. The plant had been a gift three years earlier by Barbara Stewart.

The club was excited to see the return of several members who had been ailing and to welcome the new member, Hailey Jackson. Attending the luncheon were Patsy Johnson, Brittany Mae Fisher, Barb Julian, Anne Willmann, Joyce Ann Jackson, Margie Dale Hathcox, Regina Filak, Thuan Bennett, Liz Steinsiek, Pat Johnson, Carol Worsham, Charlotte Henderson, Barbara Stewart, Judy Temples, Charlotte McDowell, Freddie Hughes, Mary Groner, Janette Watson and VaLinda Hathcox.

In November, the club met in the parlor of the First United Methodist Church. Pat Johnson was the hostess for the meeting and she also presented a program on bulbs. Referencing the book, “Heirloom Bulbs” by Chris Wiesinger, Pat, a Master Gardener, told about her favorite bulbs included in the book and how to plant and care for them. Wiesinger began his interest in bulbs searching for the native Texas red tulip, which he finally found in the Lone Oak area.

Each year, except for the pandemic years, the club has selected a gardening book for the Hopkins County Library. The club voted to select “Heirloom Bulbs” for this year.

Attending the November meeting, besides the hostess, were Judy Gilreath, Margie Dale Hathcox, Joyce Ann Jackson, VaLinda Hathcox, Charlotte Henderson, Freddie Hughes, Patsy Johnson, Charlotte McDowell, Liz Steinsiek, Barbara Stewart, Judy Temples, Janette Watson, Anne Willmann and Carol Worsham.
