Van man arrested following Como pursuit

Hopkins County Sheriff's Office Deputy Justin Wilkerson stopped a man at 8:32 p.m. Monday, March 11 on Gaskins Street in Como for not having lights on the bicycle he was riding. He attempted to check the man’s information, but Communications was unable to locate any information on him. Deputy Wilkerson obtained more information to attempt to locate identification, but the subject took off riding northbound on Gaskins Street evading detention.

He ditched the bike on the backside of a transportation business and ran through the yard to 1st Street. Deputy Wilkerson pursued him on foot while giving commands to stop.

The subject stopped in the middle of 1st Street, but refused to get on the ground as he was instructed to do. A TASER was deployed, and he was assisted to the ground, where he began resisting arrest. Deputies were able to gain control of the subject and took him into custody. They obtained identification from the man and learned he had originally provided them with a fictitious name. He was identified as Gregory Cash Chappell, 34, of Van. A records check showed he had an active warrant from the U.S. Marshals office for violating probation on a dangerous drugs charge.

Chappell was also charged with evading arrest or detention and failing to identify as a fugitive. There was no bond on the probation violation charge.

The vehicle was stopped for expired registration. During contact, officers obtained reasonable suspicion to request consent to search the vehicle. During the search, the officer located a small clear bag containing approximately 3 grams of suspected crack cocaine in the overhead compartment.

Cokefield reportedly admitted the substance, which field tested positive, was crack cocaine.

Several items of drug paraphernalia were located throughout the vehicle.

Vehicle stolen from California found at local motel

Officers noticed the back window of a yellow Dodge Ram broken. They ran the temporary tag number, but got no return for records.

The ID number in the front window was covered with a business card. A number was stamped into the console. A records check showed the truck to have been reported stolen in Los Angeles, California.

Staff at the East Industrial Drive motel where the vehicle was parked directed police to the room of the person who arrived in it.

Ernie Guevara-Lopez claimed to have bought the truck before leaving LA. The 27-year-old LA resident gave discrepancies in his story and he could not provide proof of the purchase.

Guevara-Lopez was arrested at 5:42 a.m. March 9 for theft of property — the truck.

Ecstasy, marijuana joint, gun found during traffic stop

Hopkins County Sheriff 's Office Deputy Josh Davis stopped Joseph-Kevan Bracken, 29, of Little Elm for driving a white Cadillac with a defective headlamp and an expired temporary registration.

Deputy Davis conducted a stop at 7:37 p.m. as the vehicle pulled into a gas station near the 122 exit.

Upon approach, he smelled the odor of burnt marijuana, and saw a partially smoked joint in a cup in the center console.

A probable cause search of the vehicle yielded a small amount of ecstasy, also known as MDMA, in a cigarette wrapper in the driver’s door pocket. A Smith and Wesson .38 revolver was wedged between the driver’s seat and the center console.

Bracken was arrested for possession of 1 or more but less than 4 grams of a Penalty Group 2 controlled substance. A criminal records check revealed he was a convicted felon, so a charge of unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon was also added.
