Como among 11 communities across the state selected to receive FAST grants

Texas Department of Agriculture Commissioner Sid Miller this week announced that the city of Como is one of 11 rural communities in Texas selected as a recipient of a Fire, Ambulance, and Service Truck Fund grants.

The FAST initiative aims to support rural economies by providing funds for the acquisition of new safety vehicles and equipment. The FAST pilot program is a testament to Texas Department of Agriculture's commitment to strategic investment in rural areas.

“I’m committed to supporting our rural communities. It’s my personal goal to make sure every town and rural county has the tools they need to protect their citizens. It’s crucial to their safety and their quality of life in these cities and counties that support Texas Agriculture,' Miller was quoted in an announcement release.

FAST funds, represent an investment of more than $7 million in grant funds for Texas' rural communities. Over $7 million in grants were awarded to communities in the 11 recipient counties which in addition to Como in Hopkins County, include those in Eastland, Houston, Leon, Limestone, Navarro, Nacogdoches, Red River County Sabine, Terrell, and Young counties.

The money will fund the purchase of lifesaving emergency equipment and vehicles. The city of Como received a $750,000 grant to purchase a new pumper truck, extrication tools, self-contained breathing apparatus gear, bunker gear and AEDs.

“Rural counties and towns are the beating heart of Texas agriculture,” Commissioner Miller said. “Investing in rural Texas is an investment in agriculture’s future--and that helps people all over our great state. I’m proud to support these communities.”
