Sulphur Springs woman arrested on DWI charge

A 55-year-old Sulphur Springs woman was arrested at 10:10 p.m. Saturday in the 300 block of Magnolia Street on a charge of driving while intoxicated with open container-first offense.

SSPD officers responded to the intersection of Houston and Locust Streets in reference to a possible intoxicated driver. The reporting party was behind a black Mitsubishi Mirage and allegedly observed the driver fail to maintain a single lane of travel, swerving from line to line. The reporting party continued to follow the vehicle and give updates on its location.

Officers reportedly observed the vehicle park on the side of the road at approximately the 300 block of Magnolia Street. Upon contact with the driver, officers reportedly observed a strong odor of an alcoholic beverage emitting from her person as well as bloodshot eyes and slurred speech.

The woman was reportedly unable to perform standard field sobriety testing which they documented as a refusal. She was arrested for driving while intoxicated. A preliminary breath test revealed a result of .171. While securing the woman’s vehicle, officers reportedly observed an open container in the center console cup holder.

At the jail, the woman was reportedly unable to give an adequate breath specimen. She consented to providing a blood specimen and was transported to Christus Trinity Mother Frances Hospital’s emergency room where the blood sample was obtained. She was transported back to the jail and released to staff without incident, arrest reports read.
