Sulphur Springs ISD is going about providing information about the 2024 school bond proposal and May 4 election a little differently than the two previous attempts which failed to receive the necessary votes to pass.Information has been posted on the school district website, accessible by clicking on the '2024 Sulphur Springs ISD Bond' link on the district's main page, www.ssisd.net. The bond tab has several headers that can be clicked for additional information about the bond, including flyers, current campus conditions and 'Cat Facts.'
Cat Facts are short videos featuring elementary students who introduce campuses, point out the age of each structure amd note issues reported over the school year, including an infestation of crickets on one campus, water fountains that don't work correctly, water leaks and portable buildings. Cat Facts can be viewed on the district bond page and district social media pages.
While several town hall meetings were held at various campus and community locations during the two past failed bond elections, only three official town hall meetings are scheduled, one a month, at one of the three campuses with schools which will be 'retired' if the $157.15 million bond proposal fails.
Aside from school staff, bond committee members and district trustees, the first town hall meeting held Feb. 26 at Rowena Johnson drew only half a dozen community members. Another will begin at 6 p.m. Tuesday, March 19, at Travis Primary, 130 Garrison St.The third town hall meeting is scheduled Thursday, April 18, at Sulphur Springs Elementary.
Each town hall session will include a 30 minute presentation, with 15 minutes slated afterward as a question and answer session, then 30 minutes designated for those who wish to tour the campus to take the guided tour. Superintendent Deana Steeber presented information at the Feb. 26 meeting.
The district has also started a Wildcat League to inform SSISD residents age 60 and older about current district events, groups and SSISD information.
Bond Committee members and school officials also plan to visit targeted community organizations to talk about the 2024 bond proposal as well.
