24 teams enter close to 50 projects in Ag Mechanics Show
The Sulphur Springs FFA team of Cash Gamblin, Kohen Moss and Lane Kerns earned the Grand Champion prize with their 40-foot tandem dual trailer with a hydraulic ramp at the 2024 Northeast Texas Livestock Association’s annual Ag Mechanics show.
The Reserve Grand Champion title went to Hopkins County 4-H members Braxton Northcutt and Beaux Ruff for their custom flatbed trailer made from a 2017 Dodge truck bed.
George Back from Miller Grove FFA won the showmanship award with his lighted gun cabinet.
The show featured a wide variety of projects, ranging from trailers and cattle guards to furniture and BBQ grills. Nearly 50 ag mechanics students and FFA and 4-H members made up the 24 teams in the competition.
In addition to the projects themselves, participants had to present a record book for their projects and answer some tough questions from the judges.
Other Sulphur Springs FFA team placed in their classes, including: First place class winners included:
• Class 1 — Emma Knight, Miller Grove FFA, 19-foot cattle guard;
• Class 2 — Braxton Northcutt and Beaux Ruff, Hopkins County 4-H, custom flatbed trailer made from 2017 Dodge truck bed;
• Class 3 — Kason DeLeon, Grayson Gurley and Brandon Metcalf, Saltillo FFA, 12-foot utility trailer;
• Class 4 — Rayne Thomas, Cooper Standridge and Jacob Crist, Como-Pickton FFA, three-point double hay spear; 1st in class with a 3-Point mounted double hay spear
• Class 5 — Elvis Monteroso, Adrian Ledesma, Adrian Chambley and Allie Cockrum, Como-Pickton FFA, swinging picnic table;
• Class 6 — Axle Long, North Hopkins FFA, octagonal table/fire pit;
• Class 7 — Cash Gamblin, Kohen Moss and Lane Kerns, Sulphur Springs FFA, 40-foot tandem dual trailer with hydraulic ramp; and
• Class 8 — Rayne Thomas, Cooper Standridge and Jacob Crist, Como-Pickton FFA, 4’x8’ fabrication table. Other prizewinners in the various classes included: Sulphur Springs FFA placed second in class with a 24-foot gooseneck stock trailer; a 12-foot bumper pull stock trailer; third in class with a three-point hydraulic hay bale unroller; and third in class with an ATV cattle guard.
Como-Pickton FFA also placed first in class with a three-point mounted double hay spear.
North Hopkins FFA took second place in class with their 16-foot free-standing panels and fifth place for their skid steer land plane. The prizewinning projects will be auctioned off to the highest bidders at the Sale of Champions on Saturday, Feb. 24, starting at 1 p.m. at the Hopkins County Regional Civic Center.
