Trojans grab victory over Fruitvale, 70-52

Four players score double-digits

CUMBY — The Cumby Trojans ended their three-game losing streak Tuesday with a 70-52 victory over the Fruitvale Bobcats at home. Throughout the game, the Trojans would hold an edge on the Bobcats and never relinquished it, leading to the win.

The first quarter was closely contested, with both teams playing well from the beginning. The Trojans held a 17-13 lead as the quarter expired.

The second quarter was more of the same, with both teams still playing well. The Trojans outscored the Bobcats 16-11 in the second quarter, extending their lead to 33-24 going into halftime.

Coming out of the break, the Trojans took their game to a new level in the third quarter, as the Bobcats struggled to keep up. The Trojans outscored the Bobcats 21-13 in the third quarter, increasing their lead to 54-37.

The fourth quarter was another closely contested one, as both teams played hard and tough from the beginning. In the end, the Trojans outscored the Bobcats 16-15 in the fourth quarter, capping off a 70-52 victory.

Chett Vaughan finished as the Trojans’ top scorer with 21 points. Coming in second in points was Chayton Vaughan with 13.

The double-digits didn’t stop there, as Dakari Johnson scored 12 points, and Jace Evans added 11. Rounding out the scoring was Montgomery Benton with eight, Gunner Campbell and Channing Herman with two each, and Jackson Petty with one.

With the win, the Trojans improved to 3-7 in district and 10-16 overall. They resumed action Friday, welcoming the North Hopkins Panthers to Cumby Gymnasium.
