Wildcat sub-varsity football teams split Thursday action on chilly gridirons at two locations.

The Wildcats scored on the opening drive, taking the football 52 yards for a score. Matthew Sherman threw a 20-yard scoring pass to Langston Bridges to begin the onslaught. Josh Tavera booted the point after.

Justin Richards got Sulphur Springs back in the end zone with a 22-yard touchdown run. Tavera again was perfect with the point after kick.

Tavera boomed a 22-yard field goal late in the second period to give the home team a 17-0 halftime lead.

Sherman threw to Colby Albritton for a 17-yard scoring connection. Tavera not only made the point after, but also closed out the scoring with a 21-yard field goal.

For the game, Sherman completed 8-of-12 passes for 100 yards and two scores. Ty Stroud also saw time at quarterback completing 6-of-10 for 62 yards.

Bridges had five grabs for 85 yards and Bridges snagged five for 60 yards. Richards led all rushers with 42 yards.

"The team played awesome," said Coach Mike Meador.

On the defensive side, the Wildcats did not allow a point.

"The JV defense pitched a shutout last night and won 27-0. Defense played extremely well! Everyone chipped in and played their part and kept Kaufman out the end zone. Devon Franklin and Wyatt Smithson each recovered a fumble. Sam Wilks had an interception in the end zone to seal the shutout," said coach Kurt McCain.

The Sulphur Springs freshmen lost 35-20 at Kaufman Thursday.

"It was a tough, hard loss. Sulphur Springs got behind early. We came out in the second half and outplayed the Lions, but couldn't overcome the earlier deficit," said coach Jason Meskimen.

Standouts were Matt Mitchell, Landon Fields, C.J. Williams, Matt Clarke on offense. Luke Caton, Riley Hammons and Williams had over five tackles each on defense.

Coach Cameron Warren listed Hammons, Andrew Hodges, Fields and Mykaylin Rush as standouts.
