Cumby splits district matches

The Cumby Lady Trojans won two of three recent volleyball matches. Against Yantis, the Cumby girls won by scores of 25-16, 25-14 and 25-9. Erin Morgan served five aces and recorded 14 points. Cumby lost 14-25, 25-16 and 25-14 against rival Miller Grove. Rylee Krotky turned in 14 digs, and Neely Hammond hammered home seven kills. The Lady Trojans won over Fruitvale, 25-18, 25-16 and 25-14. Hammond had six kills, Savannah Krum served for 17 points, and Krotky continued eight digs.

SS golfers compete in recent event

Junior Mariam Tran fired an 84 score for fourth overall, as members of the Sulphur Springs Lady Cats golf teams participated in Sept. 23 action at Watters Creek Golf Course near Allen. Senior Addison White shot a 108, while freshman MyKylie Meador carded a 141. Junior Makayla Pullen had a 150 score, and freshman Mattye Schmidt scored a 157. “Out of the five girls competing, this was the first tournament ever for three of them. Meador, Pullen and Schmidt are new to the team. First tournament jitters are a very real thing, and it is very intimidating coming in and playing with girls who have been there before and trying to compete,” said Whitney Spigener, Lady Cats head golf coach. The girls is Monday, Oct. 14 at Sulphur Spring play Country Club.

Lady Cats in district action

The Sulphur Springs High School volleyball team continues in district competition. The Sulphur Springs sub-varsity teams won Tuesday, Oct. 1 against Lin-dale at home, while the varsity was defeated, 3-1. In the junior varsity games, Sulphur Springs won by scores of 25-20 and 25-18; the freshmen won with 25-19, 18-25 and 25-20. In the varsity game, Sadie Washburn had 20 kills, and Parris Pickett contributed eight digs. Erika Van Benthem recored five kills, and Brooklyn Burnside and Nylah Lindley had three kills each. The Lady Cats played at district foe Greenville, Friday, Oct. 5. All three Sulphur Springs teams host rival Mount Pleasant on Tuesday. Ninth grade and JV start at 5 p.m. with varsity to follow at 6:30 p.m.

NH girls fall to Miller Grove

North Hopkins came up short in a classic five-set volleyball match against rivals from Miller Grove. The Lady Panthers lost by scores of 25-23, 22-25, 19-25, 27-25 and 16-18. Standouts for North Hopkins include: Raylee Mathis, 25 kills, five blocks; Maddison Joslin, 10 kills, 10 digs, 8 points and five aces; Selene Leon, 10 points, five aces; Ashley Aguilar, 10 digs, 13 points, three assists, one kill, one ace; Jessica Garcia, 12 assists, 5 points, one ace; Kourtney Ferrell, 14 assists, 7 points; Abigail Whaley, 10 digs, 8 points. The North Hopkins junior varsity lost to Miller Grove, 24-26 and 19-25. Standouts were Marianna Aguilar and Chyloe Vargas-Booth.

SSMS girls split two road games

The Sulphur Springs Middle School girls took a win and a loss Thursday, Oct. 3 at Mount Pleasant. The Lady Cats A team won 25-13 and 25-18. The Sulphur Springs B team lost by scores of 26-28 and 22-25. The teams will play at home Oct. 10 against Hallsville. The B game starts at 4:30 p.m., A game to follow.
