SALTILLO-The Saltillo Lions junior high baseball team hosted Miller Grove Monday, looking to defend their home field. The Lions have gotten off to a strong start this season, winning four of their first five games.

Miller Grove got things started with a solid top of the first, putting one run on the board. The Lions didn’t let that get them down, as they answered back with a pair of runs of their own, taking a 2-1 lead entering the second inning.

After a first inning that saw both teams find some offense, the second inning was quiet with neither team crossing the plate. The Lions held Miller Grove scoreless again in the top of the third, before putting another pair of runs on the board in the bottom of the frame to extend their lead to 4-1.

Despite the momentum of their threerun lead, things began to unravel a bit for the Lions in the top of the fourth. After allowing just one run through the first three frames, Saltillo allowed three runs in the inning, seeing their three-run lead evaporate to a 4-4 game.

The bats had been rolling all game for the Lions, and now finding themselves in a tied game late, they kept the runs coming when they needed them most. Saltillo put up a five spot in the bottom of the fourth, taking complete control of the game and taking a 9-4 lead.

The Lions shut Miller Grove out in the top of the fifth, walking away with a 9-4 win.

“We did not play our best,” coach Bret Myers said. “But we were able to pull out a win against a tough Miller Grove team.”

The win improves Saltillo’s record to 5-1 on the year.
