Lions fall 72-69 to Angelo State on last second miss

COMMERCE— The Texas A&M University-Commerce men's basketball team lost a heartbreaking 72-69 result against Angelo State on Saturday afternoon as part of Fill the Field House, presented by the Enrollment Management Division. The teams battled throughout the game, with the Lions' final shot coming up short to force extra time.

The loss drops the Lions to 13-8 on the season and 9-6 in the Lone Star Conference. The Rams improve to 14-4 and 10-4 in conference play.

The Lions return to action on Saturday as they host UT Tyler at 4 p.m. at the Field House.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

The game was tightly contested throughout, as there were six ties and seven lead changes in the game.

• Wayne Stewart (Philadelphia, Pa.) had his fourth double-double of the season with 10 points and 11 rebounds

• Deonta Terrell (Chicago, Ill.) led the team with 16 points, hitting seven shots. Deon Barrett (Lancaster) added 13 points, including three threes.

• Alberto Moreno (Ingenio, Gran Canaria) had 12 points on 5-of-7 shooting.

• The Lions were perfect from the free throw line, but were only able to take three free throws, as ASU was only called for nine fouls.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Lions got off to a hot start, hitting a pair of threes to take an 8-2 lead after three minutes of play. The Rams hit a pair of threes of their own to tie the game at 11 after six minutes of play. The teams traded buckets for the next several minutes, before Moreno hit a pair of shots in a row to give the Lions a five-point lead at the midway mark of the half.

A&M-Commerce took its lead to six before ASU hit threes on three consecutive possessions to take a lead. The Lions fought back to regain the lead, starting a 6-0 run that would send the Lions into halftime with a 35-34 lead.

Stewart led the team with 10 points in the first half, while three other Lions had five points apiece.

The teams battled back and forth with the lead to begin the half. After ASU gained the lead after the first possession, the Lions scored to take the lead back. After another lead change, Terrell scored five points in a row to take the lead at 42-38 with 17:59 to play. Shots then began to fall for the Rams, as they pushed their seven points at the 12 minute mark.

The Lions slowly began to chip away, as they cut the lead down to three points at the five minute mark on a three from Barrett. Trailing by six, the Lions scored on two possessions in a row, including a three-point play from Moreno with 54 seconds remaining to cut the lead to one point. ASU hit a pair of free throws to push their lead back to three, and a pair if three-point attempts in the final second were off the mark.
