Jefferson records double-double

The Sulphur Springs Lady Wildcats began the second half of their district schedule strong Tuesday with a three-set win over the Liberty-Eylau Lady Leopards. The Lady Wildcats would play well all game long and managed to hold off a comeback attempt late, leading to the win.

Prior to the game, the Lady Wildcats celebrated the careers of their two seniors: Kate Monk and Mary Taylor.

The first set would begin with the Lady Wildcats jumping out to a quick 5-1 lead. Following a point from the Lady Leopards, the Lady Wildcats embarked on a 7-2 scoring run to extend their lead to 12-4.

After the Lady Leopards managed another point, the Lady Wildcats responded with an 8-1 scoring run, increasing their lead to 20-6. Though the Lady Leopards would trim the score to 23-12 with a 6-3 scoring run, the Lady Wildcats would score the final two points of the set, winning the first set 25-12 and establishing an early lead.

The second set would begin with the Lady Wildcats building a quick 2-0 lead. From there, the Lady Leopards would go on an 8-6 scoring run, tying the score at 8-8.

After that, the Lady Wildcats would catch fire, going on an 8-1 scoring run to pull ahead 16-9. Following a brief 3-1 scoring run from the Lady Leopards that trimmed the score to 17-12, the Lady Wildcats would go on a 7-1 scoring run, building their lead to 24-13.

Though the Lady Leopards managed to score five straight points to cut the deficit to 24-18, the Lady Wildcats would end the set with the final point, winning 25-18 and increasing their lead to 2-0.

The third set kicked off with the Lady Wildcats jumping out to a quick 3-1 lead. After that, the Lady Leopards responded with a 6-1 scoring run, pulling ahead 7-4.

The Lady Wildcats would then embark on a 6-3 scoring run to tie the score at 10-10. After that, the Lady Leopards would go on a 5-2 scoring run, retaking the lead at 15-12.

After the Lady Wildcats evened the score at 16-16 with a 4-1 scoring run, the Lady Leopards rattled off a 7-3 scoring run, once again pulling ahead at 23-19. Following three straight points from the Lady Wildcats, the Lady Leopards made it to a set point with the score at 24-22.

The Lady Wildcats would score back-to-back points to tie the score at 24-24. They would then have a chance to win up 25-24, but the Lady Leopards answered with another point, tying the score at 25-25.

The Lady Leopards would then have a chance to win up a 26-25, but the Lady Wildcats would tie the score again at 2626. From there, the Lady Wildcats were able to score the last two points of the set, pulling off a 2826 win in the third set and finishing off the sweep.

Tessa Allen came up with a team-high 15 digs, adding two assists and one ace. Trinity Jefferson recorded a 12-assist, 10kill double-double, adding four digs, three aces, and one block.

Harper Hodges led in assists with 14, also tallying three digs, three aces, and one kill. Rainey Johnson came up with eight kills, three blocks, three digs, and two aces.

Monk would come away with five kills, three blocks, two assists, one ace, and one dig. Taylor finished with four kills, two aces, two blocks, and one dig.

Aaliyah Cheatum tallied four kills, two blocks, and one dig. Other contributors to the victory include Madison Jeter with two digs, one ace, and one kill, Kaylee Carter with two blocks and one kill, Lauren Dittrich with two digs, and Kyra Carter with one kill.

With the win, the Lady Wildcats improved to 4-2 in district and 19-16 overall. They resumed action Friday, welcoming the North Lamar Pantherettes to Wildcat Gym.
