Lady Trojans take non-district road game

Hammond leads with 10 kills, 4 digs

GREENVILLE- The Cumby Lady Trojans traveled to Greenville Christian Friday to face the Lady Eagles in a non-district game. With a bye in their district schedule, the Lady Trojans decided to pick up another game to keep themselves in rhythm.

Cumby got off to a bit of a rough start but were able to keep their composure and bounce back. Facing a tough Lady Eagles team who is in first place in their district, the Lady Trojans never fully lost control. Despite their rough start Cumby took the opening set by a score of 25-20.

Things got easier for the Lady Trojans as the night went on, with them winning each set a bit easier than the last. Things were still competitive, but Cumby pulled out the second set 25-18.

Looking to put the game away in straight sets, the Lady Trojans continued to play at a high level in the third set. Things were once again competitive, but Cumby walked away with the 25-17 win to take the game in straight sets.

Neely Hammond was the leader of the offense, posting a team-high 10 kills. Hammond also had four digs in Cumby’s 3-0 win.

Behind her were Ashlyn Hudson and Heather McCraw who each had eight kills. They also did a great job controlling the net, as Hudson walked away with four blocks and McCraw walked away with three blocks.

Erin Morgan had a strong all-around game, contributing in a number of different ways. Morgan finished the game with 18 assists, as well as 11 digs and six kills.

Defensively Cumby got huge contributions from a number of players, including Kaylee Bloyd and Savanna Kurn who combined for 20 digs. Bloyd had a team-high 12 digs, while Kurn had eight digs.

Coverage of Tuesday’s match against Como-Pickton will be published in Saturday’s edition of the News-Telegram. After that the Lady Trojans have just two regular season games, both of which are on the road.

Friday, the travel to North Hopkins and Tuesday, Oct. 26 they travel to Quinlan Boles for their final regular season game. Continued coverage of the Lady Trojans and their postseason run will be published in upcoming editions of the News-Telegram.
