Lady Trojans take down Lady Eagles

Win in straight sets

COMO-PICKTON- The Cumby Lady Trojans traveled to Como-Pickton Friday to face the Lady Eagles. Cumby entered the day with a ton of momentum and was looking to keep their hot start to district play going.

The Lady Trojans got off to a tremendous start, controlling the tempo of the opening set. Cumby never allowed the Lady Eagles to work their way back into it, taking the opening set by a score of 25-10.

The second set saw more of the same, as the Lady Trojans continued to play at a high level. Como-Pickton was able to make things a bit closer, but Cumby still cruised to a 25-13 win.

Looking to put the game away in the third set, the Lady Trojans kept their strong play going. While it was the closest set of the night, Cumby pulled it out 25-16 to complete their straight set win.

Neely Hammond and Ashlyn Hudson were the leaders of the offense, both putting up strong performances. Hammond had a team-high nine kills, as well as six digs, while Hudson was right behind her with eight kills and seven digs.

Setting things up was Erin Morgan who had a strong all-around game. Morgan finished with 20 assists, as well as a team-high 10 digs and five kills.

Heather McCraw and Azlyn Hornsby also had strong games, finishing with four kills each. McCraw also had four digs and three blocks, while Hornsby had six digs and 14 serve points.

Savannah Kurn had a strong defense outing, finishing with fix digs, while Kaylee Bloyd and Kelcie Fite each had five digs.

The Lady Trojans will look to keep their winning ways going with a pair of home games this week. Coverage of their Tuesday match against North Hopkins will be published in Saturday’s edition of the News-Telegram. Friday Cumby will play host to Boles. The varsity is set to go first at 4:30 p.m. with the junior varsity to follow.
