FRUITVALE- The Cumby Lady Trojans traveled to Fruitvale Tuesday, looking to remain undefeated in district play. Cumby entered the day with a ton of momentum, having not lost a game since Aug. 24 when they fell to Blue Ridge 3-0.

The Lady Trojans opened the game with a tremendous first set, setting the tone from the very beginning. Never giving Frutivale a chance to make things close, the Lady Trojans won by a score of 25-9.

The second set saw more of the same, as Cumby continued to dominate in every aspect of the game. They ended up taking the second set by the same score of 25-9.

Looking to go ahead and put the game away, the Lady Trojans won the final set by an even larger margin. They completed their straight set sweep with a 25-8 win, improving to 5-0 in district play.

Ashlyn Hudson and Heather McCraw had strong showings for Cumby, leading the team with four blocks each. Defensively they were led by Azlyn Hornsby and Kelcie Fite who ended up with nine digs apiece.

Erin Morgan had another strong showing for the Lady Trojans, racking up 12 assists, while also finishing with seven kills and six digs. Neely Hammond was right there with her, adding five kills and five digs in the 3-0 win.

Kaylee Bloyd also had a great game, racking up six assists and five digs.

Cumby will have the luxury of getting to play a pair of games at home next week, starting with their Tuesday match against North Hopkins. In that one the junior varsity will begin at 4:30 p.m. with the varsity to follow.

Friday they host Boles, a team who has also gotten off to a strong start in district play. In that one the varsity will go first at 4:30 p.m. with the junior varsity to follow.

Coverage of their match this Friday against Como-Pickton will be published in Wednesday’s edition of the News-Telegram.
