Cruise past North Hopkins

Body

CUMBY-The Cumby Lady Trojans hosted North Hopkins Tuesday, for the first in a pair of matches against the two teams this season. The Lady Trojans entered the game with a ton of momentum, entering the game ranked just outside of the Top-25 in the Texas Girls Coaches Association Volleyball Poll for Class 2A and 1A combined.

Cumby started the opening set by scoring on the first four possessions, taking a lead that they would never lose in the set. North Hopkins was able to find their rhythm, matching the Lady Trojans for a few possessions to keep things close for a bit.

With the score as close as 9-5, Cumby went on a tear, outscoring North Hopkins 12-4 to push their lead to 21-10. While North Hopkins was able to slow the Lady Trojans down a bit in the final possessions, Cumby still cruised to a 25-15 win in the opening set.

The Lady Trojans opened the second set in a similar fashion, this time scoring the first five points of the set. North Hopkins answered back by scoring on five of the next seven possessions to cut the score to 7-5, but Cumby was able to put a halt to their run.

Cumby has been known to score in bunches this season, which is exactly what they did, going on a 10-2 run to give themselves plenty of cushion. North Hopkins was able to end the set on a strong run of their own, but the Lady Trojans never had to sweat too much, taking the set by a score of 25-16.

North Hopkins opened the third set by scoring on the opening possession, taking their first lead of the night. Having to play from behind for the first time, the Lady Trojans answered back by scoring four consecutive points, once again taking a lead they would not surrender.

Cumby went on to have their strongest set of the night, finishing the set on an extremely hot run. With the score 18- 11, the Lady Trojans did not allow another point, winning the set 25-11 and completing their three-set sweep.

Cumby will look to keep their strong play going with a pair of games next week, the first of which is a home game Tuesday against Alba-Golden. The first time those two teams met, the Lady Trojans took it in three sets, winning by scores of 25-14, 25-8 and 25-22.

The junior varsity is set to go first in that one, starting at 4:30 p.m. with the varsity to follow. Friday the Lady Trojans will hit the road to face Greenville Christian. The varsity team is set to begin at 5 p.m. with the junior varsity to follow.
