Lady Lions lose to Fruitvale at home

Miller records two hits

SALTILLO — The Saltillo Lady Lions suffered another loss Tuesday with a 19-3 home loss to the Fruitvale Lady Bobcats. The Lady Bobcats outplayed the Lady Lions all game and never gave them a chance, leading to the blowout. Prior to the game, the Lady Lions celebrated the career of their lone senior: Julianna Giles.

The Lady Bobcats came to the plate first, where they faced Lani Dean in the circle. The game started with a pair of walks. After a strikeout and a batter hit by a pitch, the Lady Bobcats scored on a passed ball, taking a 1-0 lead.

After a walk loaded up the bases, another walk led to another run, giving Fruitvale a 2-0 lead. That lead climbed to 4-0 when the next two batters were hit by a pitch. The next batter walked, bringing home another runner and making the score 5-0.

A 2-RBI double followed as the the Lady Bobcats increased their lead to 7-0. An RBI single followed, bringing the score to 8-0. After a walk, the next two batters were hit by pitches, raising the score to 10-0. Two more outs followed when two runners stepped off the base to end their turn.

The Lady Lions began the bottom of the first inning with Jaylee Miller being walked. After Miller advanced to second base on a passed ball, a double play resulted when Giles hit a fly ball for an out, and Miller failed to tag up before advancing to third base. The inning ended when Ryleigh Redar hit a fly ball for an out.

The second inning began with a batter being hit by a pitch. After a pair of strikeouts, the next batter was hit by a pitch. A fly ball for an out followed, ending Fruitvale’s turn.

The bottom of the second inning started with Dean being hit by a pitch and Perez hitting a double. This was followed by Gabby Ross hitting a sacrifice RBI, bringing Dean home and trimming the score to 10-1.

This was followed by Cartwright hitting an RBI single, bringing Perez home and cutting the score to 102. Two more outs followed when Jasmine Alonso hit a fly ball for an out and Shelbi Ricketson struck out, ending the second inning.

The third inning began with a ground out. After a pair of singles, a runner was tagged out a second base. Following a walk, Fruitvale scored again on a passed ball, raising the score to 112. After two more walks, a strikeout ended their turn.

The bottom of the third inning started with Miller hitting a fly ball for an out. After Giles swatted a triple, Redar would hit an RBI single, bringing Giles home and cutting the score to 11-3.

After Dean grounded out, Perez would hit a single. Their turn ended when Ross lined out, ending the third inning.

The fourth inning began with a walk and a double. An RBI single followed, as Fruitvale increased their lead to 12-3. This was followed by a 2-RBI double, as their lead increased to 14-3.

After a ground out and a walk, two more runs were scored on a passed ball, increasing the Lady Bocats’ lead to 16-3. After a walk and a batter hit by a pitch, an inside-the-park threerun home run raised the score to 19-3. A pair of pop fly balls for outs ended their turn.

The Lady Lions were retired in order during the bottom of the fourth inning, as Cartwright struck out and both Alonso and Ricketson grounded out. This brought the game to an end, as the Lady Bobcats handed the Lady Lions a 19-3 loss.

As a team, the Lady Lions batted 5 for 16 (.313) from the plate. Miller led with two hits, while Cartwright, Giles, and Redar added one hit each. Dean, Giles, and Miller all scored one hit each.

Dean suffered the loss in the circle. Across four innings, she surrendered 19 earned runs, 12 walks, and eight hits, managing four strikeouts.

With the loss, the Lady Lions are now 0-4 on the season. They will look to score their first win Tuesday, when they travel to Alba to take on the Alba- Golden Lady Panthers.
