MILLER GROVE- The Miller Grove Lady Hornets hosted Ector Tuesday for their first in a pair of district matches this season. Both Miller Grove and Ector were predicted to make the playoffs by the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches.

Lauren Bullard got things started for the Lady Hornets, making a pair of free throws and knocking down a 3-pointer to score the first five points of the game. Miller Grove was only able to score on more time in the first frame, a layup by Lainy Burnett to give the Lady Hornets a 7-6 lead at the end of the first quarter.

Offense was even harder to come by in the second frame, with Miller Grove only posting five points in the frame. Burnett made a jump shot on an assist from Harli Watson late in the frame before Watson knocked down a 3-pointer as the first half expired. The Lady Hornets had lost their lead, trailing 16-12 at halftime.

Watson and Bullard each made another 3-pointer early in the third quarter, and the Miller Grove defense was able to slow Ector down. With just 32.2 seconds remaining in the frame, Bullard made a pair of free throws that pulled the Lady Hornets within one point, with the score at 21-20.

The two teams traded buckets back-and-forth to open the fourth quarter, until Bullard hit another 3-pointer with 3:48 left to give Miller Grove a 28-26 lead. Ector was able to tie the game back up at 31-31, but with 58.9 seconds left, Burnett knocked down a pair of free throws, that propelled the Lady Hornets to a 36-32 win.

Bullard and Watson were the leading scorers for Miller Grove, finishing with 14 points and 13 points respectively. Both Bullard and Watson made three 3-pointers each in the four-point win.

Other scorers for the Lady Hornets were Burnett with six points, Brooklyn Pursur with two points, and Kaley Dorantes with one point.

Miller Grove has a pair of road games next week and will return home Jan. 19 to host Dodd City. The junior varsity boys will begin at 5 p.m. with the varsity girls and varsity boys teams to follow.
