FRUITVALE - The Miller Grove Lady Hornets went to Fruitvale Tuesday for their seventh district game of the season. The Lady Hornets were looking to build off a dominating performance in their last match against the Yantis Lady Owls, in which they won by scores of 25-14, 25-7 and 25-5.

The opening set saw a pretty competitive match between the two teams, with neither team clearly running away from the other. The Lady Hornets managed to stay on top the entire way, winning the opening set by a score of 25-16.

The second set saw Miller Grove playing at a very high level, much like they did in the final two sets of the Yantis game. Fruitvale was never able to make things competitive, as the Lady Hornets won by a commanding score of 25-7, tying their second-largest margin of victory this season.

The third and final set was by far the closest of the game, as Fruitvale forced Miller Grove to work for their straight set win. Coming down to the wire, the Lady Hornets avoided extra points or a fourth set, pulling things out with a 25-23 win.

Lainy Burnett was the leader offensively, once again finishing with double-digit kills. Burnett posted a team-high 11 kills, as well as a pair of blocks. Behind Burnett was Jaci Roberson, who had four kills, two blocks and one ace.

Setting things up was Kayti Brignon who had yet another solid performance. Brignon had 16 assists, as well as one kill and one ace. Ava Sotelo led the defense with four blocks.

Arean Wood had two kills, while Allissa Sallee had one kill. Jamilyn Hensley and Anna Culberson each had one ace, while Culberson also finished with a team-high five digs.

The win improves the Lady Hornets’ district record to 5-2. Coverage of their Friday match against PTAA will be published in Wednesday’s edition of the News-Telegram.

Miller Grove enters their final week of the regular season, starting with a road match against Yantis Tuesday. Friday they host Fruitvale for their final regular season match, as well as their Senior Night. The junior varsity is set to begin at 5 p.m. with the varsity to follow.
