Monk tallies 27 digs

CUMBY — The Como-Pickton Lady Eagles earned a hard fought win Friday, outlasting the Cumby Lady Trojans in five sets. After falling behind going into the fourth set, the Lady Eagles managed to win consecutive sets to steal the win.

The first set started off with the Lady Eagles building a commanding 4-1 lead. Following a quick 2-1 scoring run from the Lady Trojans, the Lady Eagles went on a 5-3 scoring run, extending their lead to 10-6.

After a 5-4 scoring run by the Lady Trojans cut the score to 14-11, the Lady Trojans would go on a 6-3 scoring run, cutting the Lady Eagles’ lead to 17-16.

Following a 3-3 exchange that brought the score to 20-19, the Lady Eagles would score the final five points of the set, winning the first set 25-19 and taking the lead.

The second set would begin with the Lady Trojans jumping out to a 4-1 lead. The Lady Eagles would respond with a 4-1 scoring run of their own, tying the score at 5-5.

Both teams would continue to trade points as the set went on, eventually leading to a 15-15 tie. The Lady Eagles would then go on a 4-1 scoring run, taking a 19-16 lead.

The Lady Trojans would fight back with a 5-2 scoring run, evening the score at 21-21. After that, the Lady Trojans would score the final four points of the set, winning 25-21 and tying the score at 1-1.

The third set began with the Lady Eagles building a 4-1 lead early on. After that, the Lady Trojans would go on a 7-1 scoring run, pulling ahead 8-5.

The Lady Trojans would then go on an 8-3 scoring run to increase their lead to 16-8. Following a 4-4 exchange that brought the score to 20-12, the Lady Eagles would score six straight points, trimming the score to 20-18.

The Lady Trojans would then score four consecutive points to extend their lead to 24-18. Though the Lady Eagles managed three straight points to cut the score to 24-21, the Lady Trojans would score the final point of the set, winning 25-21 and taking a 2-1 lead.

With their backs against the wall, the Lady Eagles came into the fourth set fired up. They would jump out to a commanding 10-1 lead to begin the set.

After the Lady Trojans scored two points, the Lady Eagles responded with seven straight points, increasing their massive lead to 17-3.

The Lady Trojans would then go on a 5-3 scoring run to trim the score to 20-8. After that, the Lady Eagles closed out the set with a 5-1 run scoring run, winning the fourth set 25-9 and tying the score at 2-2, paving way for a decisive fifth set.

The fifth set would start with the Lady Eagles building a quick 3-1 lead. Following a quick point from the Lady Trojans, the Lady Eagles added four straight points to increase their lead to 7-2.

The Lady Trojans wouldn’t go down lightly, as they fought back with a 4-1 scoring run, cutting the score to 8-6. This would be followed by a 3-3 exchange by point teams, making the score 11-9.

The Lady Eagles then scored three consecutive points, extending their lead to 14-9. Though the Lady Trojans managed another point, the Lady Eagles would score the last point of the game, winning the fifth set 15-10 and capping off a five-set comeback win.

Bella Romero would record a 29-assist, 19-dig double-double, also coming up with eight aces and four kills. Addi Monk led in digs with 27, also adding nine kills, three assists, and one block, coming one kill shy of a double-double.

Maggie Brown would come up with 22 digs and two aces. Sanay Diaz also had double-digit digs with 14, adding four aces and one kill.

Sadie Wetzel led in kills with 10, also coming up with three digs and one block. Paisley Watkins finished with nine digs. Maud Poortvliet wasn’t far behind with eight digs.

Rhayne Thomas was a strong presence with seven digs and six kills. Saylor Smith would finish with four digs and four kills.

With this win, the Lady Eagles improved to 8-1 in district and 26-11 overall. They resumed action Tuesday, welcoming the North Hopkins Lady Panthers to Como-Pickton High School for their senior night game.
