Four players record double-digit digs

SHERMAN — The Como-Pickton Lady Eagles suffered a heartbreaking five-set loss to the No. 7 Nocona Lady Indians in their Area playoff game at Sherman High School Thursday. Despite hanging tough the entire game, the Lady Eagles were outplayed in the final set, leading to a bitter defeat.

The first set would be a competitive battle, as both teams fought hard for the early control. The Lady Indians would win the first set 25-17, taking a 1-0 lead.

The next set was another intense battle, as each team continued to play at a high level. The Lady Eagles would win the second set 27-25, tying the score at 1-1.

The third set would continue the trend of competitive game play, with both teams continuing to battle. The Lady Indians would come out on top, winning the third set 2517 and taking a 2-1 lead.

The fourth set was once again hard fought, as the Lady Indians tried to end the game, while the Lady Eagles tried to extend the game. Ultimately, the Lady Eagles would win the fourth set 25-23, tying the score at 2-2 and setting up a decisive fifth set.

The final set would see the Lady Indians step up their game, as the Lady Eagles couldn’t figure out how to stop them. Nocona would win the fifth set 15-7, capping off a five-set victory.

Bella Romero recorded a 31-dig, 23-assist double- double, adding two aces and one kill. Addi Monk finished with a 26kill, 26-dig double-double, also coming up with one assist and one block. Maggie Brown would record a team-high 67 digs, a season high for her, while adding four assists, two aces, and one kill.

Sanay Diaz also had double-digit digs with 17, adding one ace. Saylor Smith would come away with nine digs, three kills, one ace, one assist, and one block. Journey Brumley finished with nine digs.

Rhayne Thomas came up with seven digs, six kills, and one block. Other contributors include Maud Poortvliet with four digs and one block, and Sadie Wetzel with one kill and one block.

With the loss, the Lady Eagles’ season has come to an end. They end the season with an overall record of 28-13, finishing as co-district champions, Bi-District champions, and Area finalists. This would also be the final high school volleyball game for two senior Lady Eagles: Monk and Thomas.

The Lady Eagles will look to improve in the offseason and make a deeper playoff run next season.
