The Sulphur Springs Lady Cats traveled to Hallsville Tuesday for the first in a pair of district matches against the Lady Bobcats this season. The Lady Cats entered the day looking to push their current winning streak to three games, after beating Marshall and Pine Tree in their last two matches.

Sulphur Springs found themselves playing from behind midway through the opening set, as they got out to a 13-9 deficit. A block from senior Kaslyn Hurley gave the Lady Cats a momentum boost, as they cut it down to a three-point game.

Sulphur Springs went on a strong run following that and a few possessions later they were able to take a 17-16 lead thanks to an ace from senior Parris Pickett. A kill from AJ Dodd kept momentum on Sulphur Springs’ side as the Lady Cats went on to win the opening set by a final score of 25-19.

The second set was by far the toughest of the night for the Lady Cats. Senior Brooklyn Burnside tried to put a stop to Hallsivlle’s run, as she came up with a big block to cut the deficit to 18-12. Unfortunately they were only able to two two more points in the set as they fell 25-14.

The third set got off to a very tightly contested start as Hurley was able to give her team a 9-8 lead with a kill. Junior Addisyn Wall followed up with a block on the next possession to give Sulphur Springs a two-point lead. Despite their lead the Lady Cats were never able to create any separation and they eventually dropped the set by a close score of 25-22.

Needing to win the fourth set to keep their hopes alive, Sulphur Springs found themselves in the closest set of the night. Pickett was able to give her team a late 23-22 lead with an ace. With the score tied 23-23 Burnside and senior Peyton Hammack scored on back-to-back kills to take the set 25-23.

The fifth and deciding set would prove to be as close as the set before it, as Burnside kept the score tied at 2-2 with a block. The Lady Cats tried their best to come out on top but eventually lost the set 15-13, dropping the game by a score of 3-2.

Burnside had a very strong outing, leading the team in kills (19) and blocks (8). Also finishing in double-digits in kills was Wall who had 14.

Setting things up was Hammack who had an outstanding game. Hammack finished with 41 of the team’s 53 assists, and she also had a team-high 17 digs. The setter also had six kills and a pair of aces in the close 3-2 loss.

Pickett played a big role in the team’s close loss, having a solid all-around game. She had 14 digs, as well as a team-high three aces and three assists.

Also finishing with double-digits in digs were Dodd, Laney Hurst and Mali Maeker who each had 12 digs.

Sophomore Kinslei Smallwood provided five kills, while Myssiah Dugan and Crimson Bryant each had four. Dugan and Bryant each had one block as well.

The loss drops the Lady Cats record to 15-12 on the year and 3-2 in district play. Coverage of their Friday match against Longview will be published in Wednesday’s edition of the News-Telegram.
