Lady Cats hold off Longview comeback

Burnside racks up 25 kills

The Sulphur Springs Lady Cats hosted Longview Friday for their sixth district game of the season. Longview was the last district opponent the Lady Cats had yet to face this season.

After a loss in their last match the Lady Cats were looking to get out to a hot start and were able to do exactly that. They dominated the opening set, winning by double-digits with the final score being 25-12.

The second set was a bit closer, but Sulphur Springs was still able to pull out a 25-17 win. With their backs against the wall Longview turned the game up a notch in the third and fourth sets. Although they both required extra time, Longview won 26-24 and 27-25, forcing a fifth and deciding set.

After not being able to put their opponents away in the last two sets, Sulphur Springs found the success they had in the first two sets. The Lady Cats need gave Longview a chance to work their way back in the fifth set, as they took it by a score of 15-5.

Brooklynn Burnside led the way offensively, finishing with an impressive 25 kills. Junior Addisyn Wall finished with nine kills, while Myssiah Dugan and Kinslei Smallwood each had seven kills.

Setting thins up was senior Peyton Hammack who had yet another incredible outing, racking up 48 assists. Hammack also had nine digs as well as four aces, turning in a great all-around performance.

Defensively the team was led by AJ Dodd who had a team-high 12 digs. Mali Maeker and Laney Hurst each finished in double-digits as well, posting 11 digs and 10 digs respectively.

The win pushes Sulphur Springs to 16-12 on the season and 4-2 in district play. Coverage of their Tuesday match against Mount Pleasant will be published in Saturday’s edition of the News-Telegram.

The Lady Cats are back in action Friday against Texas High, who they fell just short to 3-2 in their first match. The varsity is set to go first at 4:30 p.m.
