Eagles rally back to beat Fruitvale, 43-37

Hernandez leads scoring charge

COMO — The Como-Pickton Eagles ended their 10-game losing streak Tuesday with a 4337 comeback win over the Fruitvale Bobcats at home. After falling behind early on, the Eagles rallied back in the second half to pull off a comeback win, scoring their first district win of the season.

The first quarter began with the Bobcats scoring on a three-pointer. Soon after, Kevin Hernandez drilled a three-pointer, tying the score at 3-3.

The Bobcats then scored eight consecutive points on a pair of two-pointers, a free throw, and a three-pointer, pulling ahead 11-3. After Hernandez scored on a two-pointer, the Bobcats closed out the first quarter with seven straight points on a three-pointer and a pair of two-pointers, increasing their lead to 18-5 as the quarter concluded.

The second quarter began with the Eagles scoring on a two-pointer by Jeremiah Hammon, cutting the score to 18-7. After the Bobcats scored again on a three-pointer and free throw, the Eagles closed out the second quarter with a three-pointer by Edwin Castillo, and a pair of two-pointer by Dane Oud, trimming the score to 2214 going into halftime.

Coming out of the break, the Eagles opened up the third quarter with two-pointers by Hernandez and Oud, bringing the score to 22-18. After a two-pointer by the Bobcats, Hernandez made another two-pointer, trimming the score to 24-20.

Following a three-pointer and two-pointer by the Bobcats, the Eagles closed out the third quarter with consecutive three-pointers by Hernandez, cutting the score to 29-26 as the third quarter concluded.

The fourth quarter began with a three-pointer by Hernandez, tying the score at 29-29. Soon after, the Eagles took their first lead of the game when Hammon made a two-pointer, pulling ahead 31-29.

The Bobcats would reclaim the lead with a free throw and three-pointer, pulling ahead 33-31. The Eagles pulled ahead once more when Castillo sank a three-pointer, taking a 3433 lead.

Soon after, Hammon would sink a three-pointer, extending the Eagles’ lead to 37-33. Hernandez then made another two-pointer to make the score 39-33.

After the Bobcats made a two-pointer, Oud made a free throw, bringing the score to 40-35. Following another two-pointer by the Bobcats that trimmed the score to 40-37, the Eagles closed out the game with a pair of free throws by Oud, and a free throw by Castillo, capping off a 43-37 victory.

Hernandez led the way for the Eagles with 20 points. Oud was second in points with nine. Castillo and Hammon rounded out the scoring with seven points each.

With the win, the Eagles improved to 1-2 in district and 2-18 overall. They resumed action Friday, traveling to Birthright to take on the North Hopkins Panthers.
