Two players record three hits each

MILLER GROVE — The Sulphur Bluff Bears locked up their second consecutive district championship Tuesday with a 10-2 victory over the Miller Grove Hornets on the road. Throughout the game, the Bears made the key plays needed and never let their guard down, cruising to a win.

The Bears set the tone for the game in the first inning, scoring a pair of runs. Gavin Brazell and Brody Gunn both scored, as the Bears took a 2-0 lead.

Following a scoreless second inning, the Bears added onto their lead when Brazell scored his second run of the game in the third inning, extending their lead to 3-0.

In the top of the fourth inning, the Bears would score four more runs. Tyson Collins, Evan Carr, Marshall Johnson, and Brody Gunn all scored, as the Bears increased their lead to 7-0. The Hornets would then score two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning, trimming the score to 7-2.

After a scoreless fifth inning, the Bears got on the board again with a trio of runs in the sixth inning. Christian Gonzalez, Ty LeMond, and Kason Joslin all scored, bringing the score to 10-2.

Following another scoreless inning by the Hornets, the game ended, as the Bears capped off a 10-2 win and clinched the district championship for District 18-1A.

As a team, the Bears batted 16 for 35 (.457) from the plate. Brazell and Brody Gunn led with three hits each. Carr, Brock Gunn, and Kaleb White tallied two hits each, while Jaydon Carrell, JT Aubrey-Foster, Johnson, and Joslin added one hit a piece.

Brazell and Brody Gunn also shared the title of leading scorer with two runs each. Carr, Collins, Gonzalez, Johnson, Joslin, and LeMond all added one run each.

Carrell earned the win on the mound. Over 3 1/3 innings, he struck out eight batters and allowed only three walks, two earned runs, and one hit. Joslin pitched the final 3 2/3 innings in relief, striking out five batters and conceding just three hits and one walk.

With the win, the Bears improved to 5-0 in district and 9-7 overall. They resumed action Thursday, playing the Hornets again, this time at Sulphur Bluff High School.
