Roberson racks up 13 kills
MILLER GROVE-The Miller Grove Lady Hornets hosted the Yantis Lady Owls Friday for a varsity only district match. The Lady Hornets entered the day as winners in each of their last two district games, looking to push their district record to 4-2.
The opening set saw the Lady Hornets setting the tone from the very beginning, pacing the way for how the rest of the game would go. Despite it being by far the closest set of the night, Miller Grove was still able to pull it out by double-digits, taking the opening set by a score of 25-14.
The Lady Hornets were able to take their play up another notch in the second set, dominating the game even more so than they did in the first. Miller Grove never allowed Yantis to score in double-digits again for the remainder of the game, as they cruised to an easy 25-7 win in the second set.
Looking to put the game away as early as possible, the Lady Hornets had their most dominating set of the entire season. Miller Grove walked away with their largest margin of victory this season, which will be extremely tough to beat moving forward, as they won the set 25-5.
Jaci Roberson led the way offensively for the Lady Hornets, finishing with a team-high 13 kills and one block. Just behind her was Lainy Burnett who had a strong all-around game. Burnett finished with nine kills, as well as three digs, two blocks and one ace.
Setting things up, as always, was Kayti Brignon who added to an already impressive season. Brignon had 21 assists to go along with three kills and one dig.
Leading the way defensively was Anna Culberson, whose six digs was a team-high for the game. Ava Sotello had one kill and one block, while Jamilyn Hensley had one ace and Arean Wood had one kill.
The win improves Miller Grove’s district record to 4-2. Their district wins include a 3-1 win on the road over Alba-Golden, a 3-2 road win over Como-Pickton and a 3-0 home win against North Hopkins.
Coverage of their Tuesday match against Fruitvale will be published in Saturday’s edition of the News-Telegram. The Lady Hornets are back at home Friday with another district game against PTAA.
Miller Grove will have just two regular season games left after this week, a trip to Yantis Tuesday, Oct. 19 and a home game against Fruitvale, Friday, Oct. 22.
Their home game against Fruitvale is also their Senior Night. The junior varsity will begin at 5 p.m. with the varsity to follow.
