My Mom’s 4th Grade Class

I’m not sure why I enjoy doing my work around fourth graders, but I do. I spend one of my class periods in my mom’s room and, sometimes more, if I can sneak away. I get so much work done in her room — probably because there is zero cell service, but I also like the atmosphere.

She’s always teaching when I come in, but I think that since these kids are learning I do too. Plus, I always feel like a special guest. It makes me feel wanted.

I like the sound of my mom’s teaching voice. She was my fifth grade teacher back in the day and it’s like a blast from the past.

She teaches fourth grade math and it’s changed from what I did in fourth grade. They’re learning what I learned in sixth grade in the fourth grade. It’s wild. I can’t imagine what the high school curriculum will be like in a few years. It’s hard enough as is.

The kids love me. I’m not really sure why, but they really do enjoy my presence. Sometimes, I teach a little and tutor; my mom says they talk about it before I walk in. I love being in here for the kids, but I mostly like being around my mom.

Today, I showed them my dog, Oliver, wearing my glasses. He really likes to play dress up. He’s such a princess. One time I taught them the Unit Circle. They were so scared. None of them wanted to do my homework for me anymore after that.

I should ask one of the kids to write me letters of recommendation, honestly. They’re a pretty bright bunch. I love talking to them. They’re so different from high school kids; they don’t have a worry in the world. They just want to eat, go outside, and be the first person to turn in their exit ticket. I swear it is like an unspoken rule that the first person to turn in their exit ticket is temporarily the best mathmatician in the class. I think it is comedic. They have such a competitive drive for the smallest things.

This week’s Guess that Song is written by Good Charlotte, a band formed in Maryland in 1996. They are an alternative rock group, not a favorite band by any means, but I enjoy quite a few of their songs. This one is by far my favorite and it was released in 2003 on The Young and the Hopeless album.

If you guessed Girls and Boys, congratulations, you win. If you didn’t, give it a listen. It may be worth an add to your playlist.
