County Democratic Women and City Cemetery Society. Jean grew up in First Christian Church in Sulphur Springs and joined First Presbyterian in 2002. She was involved in many activities and hobbies such as golf, horseback riding, cooking, gardening, knitting, needle point and especially getting the entire family together. Jean always considered her large, close family to be her greatest accomplishment. She enjoyed spending weekends working cattle, family softball games, Thanksgiving Day flag football games and holidays with her family.

She is survived by her daughters, Marilyn Bromby, Linda Payne, Carol Gee (Tim) and Sharon Burney (Bryan); granddaughters, Laura Morello (Steve), Anne Payne, Susan Baley (Korey) and Sarah Hanley (Bob); grandsons, Spencer Hodge, Christopher Gee (Alison), Kyle Burney (Brooke), Zach Burney (Ashley) and Alex Burney; great-grandchildren, John Morello (Nikki), Michelle Uhurek (Victor), Emily Schendel (Travis), Phillip Morello (Steve), Melissa Campbell (Ian), Steve Payne, Jack Payne, Colton Baley, Emma Baley, Joseph Hanley, Sadie Hanley, Nick Burney, Avery Burney, Brayden Hodge, Olivia Hodge, Addie Jones, Bailey Jones and Charlie Gee; great-great-grandchildren, A funeral service for Emma Jean Spencer Strickland, age 103, of Sulphur Springs, Txas, were conducted at 2 p.m. Friday, March 22, 2024, at First United Methodist Church with Rev. Peter McNabb officiating. Steve Morello, Korey Baley, Bob Hanley, Christopher Gee, Kyle Burney, Alex Burney, Zach Burney, and Spencer Hodge served as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers were Armando Rios, Ronny Jones and Sam Fountain. A visitation was held one hour prior to the service, and the graveside service followed the service at Sulphur Springs City Cemetery.

Jean passed away peacefully at her home surrounded by her loved ones on Monday, March 18, 2024.

Jean was born on July 29, 1920, in Cooper, Texas, to Jesse and Bertha Anderson Spencer. She was a homemaker and co-owner with her husband of A-1 Auto Supply. They also raised registered Hereford cattle.

Jean was very involved in the community. she was a member of the Ladies Golf Association, PTA, girl scout leader, very involved in the Christian Women’s Fellowship as well as Hopkins Garrette Ray, Kathryn Uhurek, Lucas Morello, Audriana Morello, Molly Schendel, Lizzy Schendel, Halle Schendel, Juniper Campbell and Wyatt Campbell; nephews, Curtis Strickland, Charles Strickland, Lee Strickland and Scott Strickland; and a niece, Cindy Sedlack. She was also survived by special nephew and family, Jim James, Sue James and Buck James.

Jean was preceded in death by her loving husband, Charles Strickland; her parents, Jesse and Bertha Spencer; and sisters, Martha Spencer and Kathryn James.
