Boys, girls each become regional champions

Billingsley takes first place

DALLAS - The Miller Grove Cross Country team traveled to the Jesse Owens Memorial Athletic Complex in Dallas Monday for their regional cross country meet.

The boys team had a great showing, taking first place as a team with a total of 24 points. Isaiah Billingsley led the way, taking home first place individually with a time of 15:59. Just behind him were Kobe Roberson and Lance Verner Davis in third place and fourth place respectively. Roberson finished with a time of 16:27, and Davis finished with a time of 16:59.

Also having a strong showing for the boys team were Riley Hasten and Anthony Lester. Hasten came in seventh place, running a 17:39, while Lester took home ninth place with a time of 18:00. Despite finishing as one of the top five runners for Miller Grove, junior Tanner Hensley finished in tenth place overall.

The girls took first place as a team as well, having just as dominant of a run, finishing with a total of 20 points. Senior Jorja Bessonett led the way, taking home second place overall with a time of 12:17. Freshman Alaira Serrano and senior Jolee Fox were right behind her, taking third place and fourth place respectively. Serrano’s time of 13:03 was good enough for third place, while Fox’s time of 13:14 had her finish in fourth place.

Sophomore Kylee Saldana had a strong showing, taking home seventh place overall, with a time of 13:58. Just behind her was freshman Jamilyn Hensley. Hensley’s time of 13:58 resulted in a ninth place finish.

“The kids competed and worked hard,” coach Gary Billingsley said. “We have two more weeks so we can tune up a few things and see what we are capable of doing at the state meet.

“It has been a long season and with so many other obstacles coming into play this year, we are blessed to have the opportunity to compete,” Billingsley added.

The state meet will be held Monday, Nov. 23 at Old Settler’s Park in Round Rock.
