Joshua Vaughn, 36, was found dead from a gunshot wound outside his North Hopkins home at 3:07 p.m. Friday afternoon. Funeral services are scheduled for 2 p.m. Wednesday at First Baptist Church Sulphur Springs.
Two North Hopkins men died Friday following an incident that ended in a murder-suicide reportedly stemming from an ongoing feud.
At approximately 3:07 p.m. Friday, Nov. 8, the Hopkins County Sheriff’s Office received a call from a woman requesting assistance at her son’s residence. The woman reportedly stated she did not know what had occurred, but her daughter-in-law called her screaming for help.
Deputies arrived at the northern Hopkins County residence and reportedly found Joshua Vaughn, 36, lying on the ground deceased from a gunshot wound. Judge Brad Cummings was notified, and he pronounced Vaughn dead at the scene.
James Kilgore, 60, also of northern Hopkins County, was identified as the suspect in the case.
Members of the Vaughn family reportedly confirmed there had been multiple altercations with Kilgore, but believed they had reconciled their differences and, despite rumors, were unaware of what led to the incident.
A manhunt for Kilgore was conducted Friday evening, with the Hopkins County Sheriff’s Office, Sulphur Springs Police Department, Hopkins County Sheriff’s Posse, Texas Rangers, South Sulphur/North Hopkins Volunteer Fire Department, Delta County Game Warden, Hopkins County Emergency Medical Services and Texas Parks and Wildlife participating.
At approximately 4:48 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 9, Kilgore was found in a remote location at Cooper Lake, deceased from a gunshot wound. Judge Brad Cummings was notified and pronounced Kilgore dead at the scene.
The HCSO asks the public to pray for the families involved.
Vaughn was described as a cowboy with a generous heart who lived his life simply. He and his wife Nicole had four children. Community members described Vaughn as a hardworking man who could be counted on and was always willing to help others.
Funeral services for Vaughn are scheduled for 2 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 13 at First Baptist Church in Sulphur Springs. Visitation will be held Tuesday, Nov. 12 from 6–8 p.m. at West Oaks Funeral Home.
