Winnsboro man arrested on multiple felonies

Coy Wayne Wells, 53, of Winnsboro was arrested by Hopkins County Sheriff’s deputies on County Road 2398 between Pickton and Winnsboro at 9:52 a.m. Friday.

Deputies were responding to a disturbance at the location. At 9:24 a.m., a woman reported her husband showed up at the residence swinging a knife and an axe handle, according to call logs. Upon arrival, deputies made contact with Wells, who allegedly failed to comply with instructions to stop, driving off through a pasture in a 2020 Ford F-150 while fleeing back to the residence where the disturbance was reported.

Deputies reportedly pursued Wells into the residence. Wells was taken into custody without further incident.

During an inventory of the vehicle before it was impounded, deputies reportedly located a firearm in the bed of the truck. A records check revealed that Wells was a convicted felon, having been arrested for possession of 1-4 grams of a Penalty Group 1 controlled substance in 2017 Upon further investigation, deputies reportedly determined Wells had committed aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

Upon arrival at the jail, deputies reportedly discovered Wells was in possession of 87.58 grams of a crystal-like substance believed to be methamphetamine. Arrest reports did not specify whether the prohibited substance was found on his person or in his truck.

Wells was charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, possession of 4-200 grams of a Penalty Group 1 controlled substance, unlawful possession of a firearm and evading arrest or detention with a motor vehicle.

Bond was set at $80,000, and Wells remained in custody as of press time, according to arrest reports and jail records.
