Greenville leader seeks House District 2 seat

Kristen Washington has filed to run as the Democratic candidate to fill the vacancy for State Representative, House District 2. A special election has been called for Nov. 7, 2023, to fill the vacancy created by Bryan Slaton.

Washington, a 2005 Greenville High School graduate, most recently served her hometown as councilwoman for District 3. She is the single mother of two sons, one of whom is a Class of 2023 graduate and the other is currently enrolled at and serves on the Superintendent Scholars Committee at Greenville ISD. Washington is also the daughter of proud Becky and Reginald Washington, Sr., of Greenville.

The District 2 candidate is a lifelong member of Bethlehem Missionary Baptist Church in Greenville. As a member of Bethlehem's Women's Ministry, Washington helped Bethlehem launch a Prayer Counselors Committee, which serve as “paramedics in the Lord's Hospital.” In 2017, Kristen answered the call to ministry and became the 2nd Daughter in Ministry at Bethlehem. She now leads the church's Faith Evangelism Digital Media Ministry and serves as minister of communications.

Washington indicated a dedication to service which has included serving as a member of the Ancient Free Accepted Masons of Dallas, Queen of Sheba Grand Chapter Divine Light #32, for which she served as secretary and associate matron. She was also a previous member of M.W Mount Carmel Grand Lodge of Texas A.F.A.M & Deborah Grand Chapter O.E.S Lily of the Valley Chapter #55 of Dallas. Additionally, she noted she is a member of Zeta Amicae-Dallas, which is an auxiliary of Zeta Phi Beta Incorporated.

Kristen indicated a long history of being a civil servant through her charitable work and has been a strong voice for the Black community.

She has represented District 3 and all citizens of Greenville by serving on the Greenville Downtown Steering Committee, Transportation Committee, and chaired the Neighborhood and Facilities Development Committee, as well as Public Safety and Community Development.

Washington indicated her motto is to “Dream Without Fear.” She said she believes in a government ‘of the People, for the People, and by the People,” and believes government should serve every American equally and with respect.

The Democratic District 2 candidate said, if elected, “I will work night and day for the people of House District 2. I will listen, I will hear, I will work, and I will produce for you.

“I would sincerely appreciate your vote and support,” the candidate said.
