The Sulphur Springs High School chapters of the National Honor Society and National Technical Honor Society inducted new members at ceremonies Thursday evening.
National Honor Society
The SSHS National Honor Society chapter is named in honor of Gladys Alexander, a teacher who founded the chapter in 1940, but also the Student Council, and aided in the organization of the Lee Willis Chapter of the Future Teachers of America. Alexander taught band, drill team, football, Latin, English, history and almost every subject except agriculture. She retired in 1961, but her contributions to education didn’t end there. She became a substitute teacher and taught summer school after retirement. In 1966, the SSHS National Honor Society Chapter was named after Gladys Alexander to honor the tradition of excellence in academics she began at SSHS.
NHS focuses on four pillars: Scholarship — Students must maintain a “3.5 or higher minimum cumulative grade point average, based on the Sulphur Springs High School weighted scale. They must also have good marks from teacher evaluations and then voted on by a faculty council, in order to be considered,” NHS head sponsor Renee Maeker said: Service — Students must make voluntary con-tributions to the school or community, done without compensation; Leadership — Students must demonstrate leadership through school or community activities while working with or for others; and Character — Students must demonstrate good character through cooperation, honesty and reliability, courtesy, concern and respect for others, as well as having a clean disciplinary record.
