SALTILLO — The Saltillo school board renewed their superintendent’s contract, among other items of business at their regular January meeting on Thursday.

Before the board convened, they arrived to find the boardroom laden in baked goods, other snacks and handwritten notes of appreciation provided by the first and eighth grades for school board appreciation week.

The board began with announcements at 6 p.m. Superintendent David Stickles informed the board that Saltillo FFA attended the Fort Worth Junior Ag Mechanics show Jan. 17-20. Six projects were entered with students receiving four blue and two red ribbons. Dillon Beadle, Cheyenne Neal, Raegan Speir, Kaleb Harris and Will Gurley received blue ribbons, and Dillon Beadle, Cheyenne Neal, Erik Heukels and Chaeli Spear further received red ribbons. Board members John Brian Beadle and Chad Neal both stated they thought the judging was tough, but in most instances, fair.

Stickles also informed the board that the school had participated in and won UIL in a victory over Avery. Stickles thanked elementary school principal Tim Lane and assistant principal Joli Maroney for their hard work, as well as all children who participated.

Stickles informed the group that an item of business in the near future would be to redo tile work on Athletic Director Bill Giles’ home. Neal posited the home had been in its location since he was in grade school, and board member Mark Sustaire stated he believed it had been there for at least 40 years. The board agreed that replacing flooring in the home would be a worthwhile effort and resolved to investigate more how the ductwork in the home was structured.

Stickles informed the group that both baseball and softball schedules would be ready soon and that the group’s February board meeting would take place on the 27th. For basketball, senior night for the girls would be Feb. 4 and for the boys, Feb. 11, Stickles informed the group.

The group then reviewed previous minutes.  The previous October meeting minutes necessitated an amendment due to the misspelling of a name, and the group unanimously passed the amended minutes. The group then unanimously passed their consent agenda as well as their January financials.

The group then entered into executive session from 6:25 p.m. to 8:50 p.m.

After emerging from executive session, the board unanimously acted to extend Stickles contract for an additional year, with a salary of $100,000 per year. Board member Chip Tully wanted to clarify for the record what year Stickles contract was effective through, and board member Barry Brewer stated it would be effective through the 2021-2022 school year.

With no school transfers and no journal voucher, the meeting was adjourned without any further business at 8:52 p.m.
