A Sulphur Springs police officer sustained a minor injury to his hand while making an arrest Tuesday evening.

Officers were called to an apartment complex on Industrial Drive West to conduct a welfare check on a woman, reportedly the man’s former girlfriend. They observed Lucas Matthew Smith, 27, of Sulphur Springs was at the scene and appeared to be out of breath.

Smith reportedly stated he and the woman had been involved in a disturbance, and she had left the scene. When the woman was located, she allegedly appeared to have injuries and stated Smith had assaulted her.

Smith reportedly physically resisted while being taken into custody and was restrained using the necessary amount of force to repel aggression. During the arrest, one of the officers was slightly injured. Smith was arrested at 9:17 p.m.

Smith was charged with one count each of assault causing bodily injury to a member of family or household, resisting arrest and assault on a public servant. Bond was set at $24,000 on all charges, and he remained in custody as of press time Friday.
