A 21-year-old Sulphur Springs man was accused of assaulting a 4-month-old Thursday night. The child was in the hospital.

Hopkins County Sheriff's Office Deputies Mark Holcomb and Aaron Chaney responded at CHRISTUS Mother Frances Hospital-Sulphur Springs for an offense alleged to involve a 4-monthold child. Deputies were told Romeo Jenkins had assaulted his child the night before at their rural residence.

Deputies then contacted Jenkins at his place of work. Jenkins reportedly agreed to be interviewed. He was taken to the Hopkins County Law Enforcement Center, where he allegedly admitted to injuring the child by 'forcefully grabbing the child out of her bassinet out of anger and frustration, and forcefully placing the child on top of the mother, causing the child to land in an awkward position,' Hopkins County Sheriff 's deputies Holcomb and Chaney alleged in arrest reports.

Child Protective Services personnel were notified and responded with their own investigation into the case of alleged assault of a child by the father. CPS personnel contacted the child's mother and other family.

Jenkins was taken into custody at 4:20 p.m. Oct. 27 and escorted into Hopkins County jail, where he was booked in on a felony injury to a child charge, according to arrest reports.

A 24-hour hold was requested, the victim was notified he'd been arrested, and an emergency protective order was requested by deputies for the mother and child.
