Hopkins County Genealogical Society will meet at 7 p.m. Thursday, March 16, at the HCGS Library, 611 North Davis St. Kenny Sivard will present 'The History of Fort Towson.' He will talk about how both Sam Houston and Davy Crockett went there before coming to Texas. He will also talk about the fort being a staging area for the Mexican American War.

Sivard, a seventh-generation resident of Mc-Curtain County, Okla., currently, is the president of the McCurtain County Historical Society and serves on the board of directors of the Oklahoma Historical Society, where he sits on the organization's Research and Publications Committees. He also serves on the executive board of the Friends of Fort Towson Historic Site and the board of directors of the Friends of Honey Springs Historic Battlefield.

Kenny Sivard will speak to in person, however, those unable to attend are invited to attend via Zoom. The time will be the same — March 16, 2023, 7 p.m. Central Time (US and Canada).

The Zoom meeting will be hosted by HCGS member Larry Pettit, from his home in Keller, Texas.

Republican Women Event

Texas Federation of Republican Women invites all Republican women to a meeting at The Venue, 219 Main St. in Sulphur Springs from 6:30 to 7 p.m. Monday, March 20.

The special speaker will be Melonie Grammer.

2023 School Board Election Forum

A School Board Election Forum will be conducted at 6 p.m. Thurday, March 30, at Hopkins County Reigonal Civic Center by Hopkins County Republican Women. Featured will be candidates on the May 6 Sulphur Springs ISD and Como-Pickton CISD Board of Trustees Election ballots. Candidates for three at-large seats on SSISD's board are Darla Reed, Wes Cooper, Earvin Larry Jr. and Adam Teer. Candidates for four at-large seats on CPCISD's school board are Brittney Smith, Jim Murray, Keith Monk, DJ Carr and Danny Ireland. All are welcome to attend the forum.
