Hopkins County resident Opal Christine Young will be celebrating her 100th birthday on Monday, Aug. 1.

Young was born Aug. 1, 1922 to the parents of Rufus and Vada Pryor in Sulphur Springs, Texas, Pleasant Hill Community. She attended and finished school there.

She became a member of the Pleasant Hill Missionary Baptist Church at a very young age where she has attended faithfully, teaching Sunday school, ushering and singing in the choir as long as she was able. She is now a Mother of the Church.

Young was the dedicated wife of Wallace Young (deceased) for over 50 years.

They were the honored parents of 11 children, three boys and eight girls. Sandra Scott, James Young, Janice Young-Murray Patricia Boyd (deceased), Wanda Scurlark, DeLoras Ritz, Gerald Young, Barbara Hawkins, Ricky Young, Creshel Bishop and Felecia Young.

She delightfully claims her titles as a grandmother, great grandmother and great-great grandmother to many.

She attributes her longevity to her Creator and offers these words, “I always tried to do what I thought was right by the Lord. He’s left me here for something. Perhaps to be a testimony. You can do many things that are not worth salt, but always try to do your best for the Lord.”

She will be celebrating her 100th birthday on July 30 at the League Street Church of Christ located at 1100 League Street in Sulphur Springs.
