Dustin Carr recipient of Masons' Community Builders award

Dustin Carr, superintendent of Sulphur Bluff Independent School District, will be honored next month for distinguished service to the Sulphur Bluff community and Hopkins County. Sulphur Bluff Lodge #246 has selected Carr to receive their Community Builder award for 2020.

“It is an incredible honor to serve the community of Sulphur Bluff. I appreciate Mr. [Don] South and the members of the Masonic Lodge for thinking of me for this distinguished acknowledgment,” Carr said. “I can’t say enough about the wonderful people from our area and school district that work together every day to make this such a special place. Our family is extremely fortunate to be so welcomed into the Sulphur Bluff community.”

The award is presented by Masonic lodges to formally recognize outstanding non-Masons who have distinguished themselves through their services to the community, local government, church, school system or humanity. Carr is being honored for his public service as superintendent in the Sulphur Bluff school system.

Carr has been in education for 14 years, seven years in Como-Pickton CISD and seven at Sulphur Bluff. He came to Sulphur Bluff in 2014 and “has done an outstanding job with the school system,” a statement from Masonic Lodge #246 states.

Carr graduated from Mount Vernon High School in 1992. He attended the University of Houston and received a bachelor’s of science in administration. Once he entered the education field, he attended Lamar University and received a master’s degree in educational administration. Carr received his superintendent certification through the Bill Ratliff School Executive Academy in partnership with Regional 8 ESC and Texas A&M University- Commerce.

Carr said that his grandfather was a Mason for over 60 years.“I know he would be looking on with a proud smile on his face,” he said. “Thank you again to the Masonic Lodge for the tremendous honor.”Carr will receive the Community Builders award at a reception to be held at 6 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 29 at the Sulphur Bluff Community Center, 11865 West Farm Road 71. A beans and cornbread dinner will be served. The meal is by donation only with proceeds going to the scholarship and general fund of the Masonic Lodge.
