Kristin Washington, the lone Democratic contender for the vacant Texas House District 2 seat, will greet Sulphur Springs voters from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 28, at a beans and cornbread dinner in the Grays Building in Pacific Park.

This will be Washington’s first official campaign event in Sulphur Springs since announcing her candidacy for the District 2 House seat.

According to her website, Washington “believes that [Texas] must appropriately fund education, invest in our infrastructure and use taxpayer dollars wisely. She will always look at ways to eliminate wasteful expenditures, and work towards lowering the tax burden on our constituents while still providing excellent services.”

The Greenville native pledged to work on behalf of rural public education and for all public schools, students and teachers. She favors raising the basic allotment for students and is opposed to unfunded mandates, high stakes testing and the A-F school grading system.

The daughter of a former public school teacher, Washington indicated plans to advocate for a teacher pay raise and supports Proposition 9, which would give retired teachers a cost of living raise.

Washington said she will work to ensure rural Texans have access to the best healthcare available by supporting rural hospitals and expanding Medicaid.

The Sept. 28 dinner will allow voters to visit with Washington and ask questions on these and any other relevant topics of interest.
