Cumby man is accused of assaulting couple and wife

Hopkins County Sheriff's Office Deputies Isaac Foley, Drew Fisher and Ryan Reed arrested a 46-year-old Cumby man on three counts of aggravated assault with a vehicle, two counts of aggravated assault with a firearm, and one aggravated kidnapping charge early Tuesday mornning.

According to Hopkins County Sheriff 's office reports deputies responded to a disturbance in which weapons were reportedly involved on County Road 1149 south of Miller Grove at 1:43 a.m. Tuesday.

Deputies encountered David Reed Tipps in the yard of the CR 1149 address and instructed him to walk backward toward deputies. Tipps was detained while deptuies further investigated the situation.

The officers then checked the man's spouse, who was also reported to have been involved in the disturbance. While investigating, deputies were made aware of two additional people who became involved in the incident when they attempted to help Tipps's wife.

While talking to officers, Tipps allegedly admitted 'he accidentally struck the victims' vehicle on County Road 1149,' the officer noted in arrest reports.

Tipps reportedly saw his wife in a couple's vehicle shortly after they picked her up. He then is accused of striking their vehicle with his own, forcing the other vehicle into the ditch. The Cumby man then allgedly got out of his vehicle, pointed a firearm at the couple and his wife as he approached the other vehicle. Tipps then reportedly branished a firearm while forcing his spouse of the other vehicle and into his pickup, arrest reports state.

David Reed Tipps also allegedly brandished the gun at the other man, stated ,'You've got it coming,' then drove off with his wife, Deputy Foley alleged in arrest reports.

Tipps was taken into custody at 2:34 a.m. and booked into Hopkins County jail at 4:02 a.m. Tuesday, July 18, on three aggravated assault with a deadly weap-on charges, for allegedly ramming the other vehicle containing a couple and his wife; two counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon for brandishing the firearm; and one count of aggravated kidnapping, for forcing his wife to leave the couple's vehicle and go with him to his truck, according to arrest reports and Sheriff Lewis Tatum.

The investigation into is ongoing, Tatum noted. Tipps' occuation, according to arrest reports, is as an Alba Police Officer.
